IMO Instructor training (6.09)
We offer the IMO instructor training course in collaboration with Redensign Training Limited on the Isle of Wight. This blended course is specifically designed to meet the requirements of the IMO model course 6.09. It is aimed at professional seafarers who want to augment their professional experience by becoming a competent instructor working within the maritime sector. The course leads to an internationally recognised IMO maritime training qualification. On this course, we introduce the basic theory of training together with how it needs to be delivered to meet the requirements of STCW95: International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers.
This six-day residential course is very hands-on, involving lots of activities linked to the development of skills and knowledge required by instructors working in the maritime sector. The benefit of offering this course at the Redensign maritime training facility is that participants have access to the full range of training aids that are essential to the provision of maritime-based training and in particular those required by STCW95.
The course will ensure that participants are able to:
- Understand the training cycle
- Understand learning styles and how people learn
- Understand the role and responsibilities of the trainer
- Develop effective training materials and resources
- Organise effective training events
- Deliver presentations
- Utilise learning activities and exercises
- Demonstrate skills
- Instruct learners
- Coach learners
- Evaluate the effectiveness of training
- Understand the role of the IMO and STCW95 standards in support of maritime training
All participants will be expected to deliver a number of training sessions and presentations as part of the course. All these presentations will be assessed through observation and peer review. A final micro-teach session is used as a summative assessment for the course.
