With the support of Associate Consultant Dr. Patrick Coutin, RI has successfully concluded the Recreational Fisheries Project review. The project’s findings, delivered in three comprehensive reports, the last of which was presented to the Cornwall Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority (CIFCA) in December 2024.
The project aimed to enhance the management and sustainability of Cornwall's recreational fisheries. Focusing on inshore marine and estuarine hook-and-line fisheries, the initiative reviewed the current recreational fishery strategy and developed recommendations to improve stakeholder engagement, strengthen fishery monitoring, and implement a co-management approach.
The final report outlines actionable steps for a Better Sea Angling Strategy for Cornwall, addressing key challenges in sea angling and the sustainable management of inshore fisheries. The recommendations, once implemented by CIFCA, are expected to yield the following outcomes:
1. A Guide to Sustainable Sea Angling in Cornwall: This guide, alongside updated website resources, will enhance community awareness about the conservation status of fish stocks.
2. Collaborative Research and Monitoring: New processes will be introduced to gather better data on species composition, as well as retained and discarded catch by shore and boat anglers.
3. Stakeholder Working Group: A dedicated group will oversee the implementation of the Better Sea Angling Strategy and associated monitoring programs.
4. Annual Stock Assessment Reviews: Regular reviews of UK and European fishery stock data will inform community education on threatened or over-exploited species, ensuring up-to-date and effective conservation efforts.
5. Enhanced Communication and Reduced Conflict: Improved information sharing and cooperative management will foster a sense of shared stewardship among stakeholders, minimising discord and promoting sustainable fisheries.
RI recognises the importance of this innovative approach to fisheries management, emphasising the involvement of both commercial and recreational stakeholders. "This strategy represents a significant step forward for Cornwall's fisheries," said a spokesperson for RI. "By fostering collaboration and prioritising sustainability, will help ensure that Cornwall’s fisheries remain a vital resource for future generations."
