Develop the ability to Assure the quality of approved training providers
External Quality Assurance plays a vital role in maintaining confidence in qualifications and workplace competence programmes. It ensures that approved training providers and assessment centres consistently apply assessment standards and that learners achieve qualifications through fair, valid and reliable assessment.
At RI Training, we deliver practical External Quality Assurer (EQA) Development programmes for individuals and awarding organisations responsible for externally monitoring the quality of training and assessment. Whether you are new to the EQA role or looking to formalise your existing experience, our programmes provide the practical skills and nationally recognised qualifications needed to become an effective External Quality Assurer.
Who should attend
Our EQA Development programmes are suitable for:
- Aspiring External Quality Assurers
- Existing External Quality Assurers
- Awarding organisation quality assurance staff
- Experienced Internal Quality Assurers progressing to the EQA role
- Assessment managers
- Individuals responsible for monitoring approved centres
- Organisations developing External Quality Assurance teams
Participants will normally have experience as assessors and Internal Quality Assurers and wish to develop the additional skills required to monitor, support and evaluate approved assessment centres.

Course Overview
Our programmes are designed to be flexible and can be delivered for awarding organisations or groups of individual learners. Training may be delivered face-to-face, online or through a blended learning approach, depending on your requirements.
Depending on the programme selected, training is typically delivered over one or two days and combines tutor-led sessions, practical activities, discussions and realistic External Quality Assurance scenarios.
The emphasis is always on developing practical quality assurance skills that can be applied immediately when monitoring approved training providers.
what you will learn
All EQA training programmes include the key areas required for effective external quality assurance.
Topics include:
- Principles and practices of External Quality Assurance
- Roles and responsibilities of the EQA
- Risk-based approaches to External Quality Assurance
- Planning and conducting centre monitoring activities
- Sampling assessment and Internal Quality Assurance decisions
- Supporting and advising approved centres
- Identifying risks and areas for improvement
- Producing External Quality Assurance reports
- Awarding organisation policies and requirements
- Regulatory and compliance requirements
- Legal and ethical responsibilities of the External Quality Assurer
Throughout the programme, learners participate in practical exercises based on realistic centre monitoring and quality assurance activities, helping them develop confidence as well as technical knowledge.

Nationally Recognised Qualifications
Learners can choose to complete one of the following nationally recognised qualifications:
We offer two IQA qualifications:
- Level 4 Award in Understanding the External Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practice
- Level 4 Award in the External Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practice
We will help you select the qualification that best matches your role and responsibilities.
Please note that the performance-based qualification requires learners to be working with an awarding organisation and have access to approved centres that can be monitored as part of their evidence portfolio.
Assessment and Certification
The qualifications are competency-based and require learners to demonstrate their External Quality Assurance skills in real working environments.
Evidence is collected throughout the programme using SwiftTrack, our secure online e-portfolio platform. Learners can upload monitoring reports, sampling records, centre visit documentation, feedback records and other supporting evidence while receiving ongoing guidance from their assessor.
Once the required evidence has been completed, the portfolio is assessed against the qualification standards before certification is awarded.
