FlyingFish Launches New Digital Assessment Platform Using Moodle LMS

FlyingFish, the Isle of Wight based seafarer training provider, has taken a significant step towards digital transformation by launching its own Moodle-based Learning Management System (LMS). With the support of RI, Flying Fish has successfully transitioned its assessment process from traditional paper-based exams to a fully digital platform.

The project was led by Andy Hunt from Flying Fish in collaboration with the team at RI, who helped design and implement the scalable LMS. The new platform is designed to host both digital assessment tools and the upcoming digital training resources being developed by the Flying Fish team. This move marks a crucial milestone for the company, which has been a leading provider of STCW safety training courses for seafarers at their Cowes-based facility.

Historically, each course required a final assessment, which was completed using paper-based exams. Now, with the help of Patrick and the RI team, Flying Fish has digitised the STCW assessments. The questions have been converted into a digital format and uploaded into a Moodle question repository based on STCW assessment criteria for different courses.

The new STCW assessment course on Moodle now hosts quizzes covering a range of essential safety training topics, including:

  • Elementary First Aid
  • Proficiency in Designated Security Duties
  • Crisis Management and Human Behaviour
  • Firefighting and Prevention
  • Proficiency in Security Awareness
  • Personal Safety and Social Responsibility
  • Personal Survival Techniques

The system is designed to generate assessments randomly, ensuring a unique experience for each student, and all assessments will be password-protected to maintain security.

Going forward, all Flying Fish students will be provided with their own logins for the Moodle platform, enabling them to access their assessments through any web-enabled mobile device. This digital transformation will significantly reduce costs associated with printing and manual grading, providing both financial and operational efficiencies for the company.

Flying Fish is currently seeking endorsement for the new system from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA), with plans to roll out the digital assessments in the coming weeks.

This new platform represents a major leap in Flying Fish’s commitment to modernising its training programs and enhancing the learning experience for its students.
