Tetrosyl team completes bespoke Non-Food HACCP Developer programme

RI Training has delivered a bespoke two-day Non-Food HACCP Developer programme for members of the Tetrosyl Ltd team.

Designed around Tetrosyl’s own car-care products and manufacturing processes, the programme enabled participants to develop their understanding of HACCP and apply its principles directly within their workplace.

Turning HACCP principles into practical plans

During the first workshop, Patrick McDaniel introduced the group to the principles of HACCP and the tools used to develop an effective HACCP plan.

Following the workshop, the participants were divided into two smaller teams. Each team was given six weeks to develop a revised HACCP plan for a different group of Tetrosyl car-care products.

This assignment allowed the participants to move beyond learning the theory and apply the HACCP development process to products and processes with which they were already familiar.

When the group returned for the second day, each team presented its hazard analysis and draft HACCP plan to the other participants. Team members explained and justified the decisions they had made, including their assessment of the hazards and identification of critical control points.

The presentations generated some excellent discussion and constructive debate. They also enabled the participants to compare their approaches and consider whether the controls they had selected were appropriate and proportionate to the risks involved.

The importance of prerequisite programmes

One of the key learning points was that many potential hazards were already being effectively managed through Tetrosyl’s existing prerequisite programmes.

Prerequisite programmes provide the fundamental conditions and operating practices needed to maintain a controlled manufacturing environment. They may include supplier approval, staff training, cleaning, maintenance, storage, traceability, calibration and other established quality and safety controls.

Recognising where hazards are already controlled through these arrangements is important. Not every control should automatically be classified as a critical control point.

The exercise also reinforced the importance of describing hazards clearly and accurately. A vague or poorly defined hazard makes it difficult to assess risk, select appropriate controls or determine whether a critical control point is required.

Validation, verification and review

Beginning the second workshop with the team presentations provided a strong foundation for the remainder of the programme.

The participants used their draft plans to explore the requirements for validating the controls they had selected, verifying that the HACCP system was operating as intended and reviewing the plan when products, processes or other circumstances changed.

Using the teams’ own work made these subjects practical and relevant. It also enabled the details of the identified critical control points—including control measures, critical limits, monitoring arrangements and corrective actions—to be considered and refined.

Successful completion

The programme concluded with a final assessment delivered through the RI Learn Online platform.

The bespoke Tetrosyl Non-Food HACCP Developer course included a 40-question multiple-choice assessment. All participants achieved the required pass mark and qualified for their RI Training Non-Food HACCP Developer Certificate.

Patrick commented:

“It was a very constructive and enjoyable second day, with great engagement from everyone involved. The assignment approach worked particularly well because it enabled participants to apply the development tools to their own products and then explain and justify their decisions.”
