Celebrating success: Adam achieves the iCQ Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training
Adam completed the qualification through a bespoke development programme designed to strengthen both his understanding of learning and development principles and his ability to apply them within the workplace. His achievement represents more than the completion of a qualification. Over the course of the programme, Adam used his learning to help develop and strengthen the training function at Pitkin and Ruddock.
Developing knowledge through structured workshops
Adam’s programme began with a series of tutor-led workshops covering the complete training cycle.
These explored how to:
- Identify organisational and individual learning needs.
- Establish clear learning objectives.
- Plan structured training and development activities.
- Create engaging learning resources.
- Facilitate effective learning.
- Assess learner performance.
- Provide constructive feedback.
- Evaluate the effectiveness and impact of training.
The workshops provided the underpinning knowledge needed for the qualification, but the programme was designed to go beyond classroom learning.
Adam was also required to demonstrate how he could apply these principles to the real training and development needs of his employer.
Applying the learning at Pitkin and Ruddock
Drawing on his existing background as an engineer, Adam combined his technical expertise with a more structured and strategic approach to developing people.
He applied his new knowledge to enhance the company’s training function and create development opportunities for its employees. This included a particular emphasis on supporting apprentice engineers as they developed the technical knowledge and practical competence required for their roles.
By applying the learning directly within the organisation, Adam was able to demonstrate how effective training can support both individual performance and wider business needs.
His workplace activities allowed him to generate evidence across the different stages of the training cycle—from identifying needs and planning learning through to delivery, assessment and evaluation.
Building a portfolio through SwiftTrack
An important part of Adam’s programme was demonstrating his knowledge and competence through a portfolio of evidence.
The SwiftTrack e-portfolio system was used to support this process. Through the SwiftTrack app, Adam was able to:
- Record his progress.
- Upload supporting documents and other evidence.
- Provide accounts of his workplace activities.
- Map evidence against the qualification requirements.
- Receive feedback from his assessor.
- Monitor outstanding requirements.
The system provided a clear connection between the qualification criteria, Adam’s workplace activities and the assessment decisions being made.
It also enabled the assessor and quality assurer to monitor progress and review evidence through secure accounts, creating a transparent record of the complete assessment process.
Using an e-portfolio was particularly valuable for a programme based around ongoing workplace development. Evidence could be collected as activities took place rather than reconstructed at the end of the programme.
Developing a Training Manager
Throughout the programme, Adam demonstrated a strong commitment to both his own development and the development of others.
His practical work showed how a vocational teaching qualification can support someone who is establishing or managing an internal training function. Rather than treating training as a series of isolated events, Adam developed a more systematic approach linked to organisational requirements and employee progression.
Patrick McDaniel, who supported Adam throughout the programme, commented:
“It has been a genuine pleasure to work with Adam. His commitment, professionalism and enthusiasm for developing others have been exceptional. He has successfully combined his technical experience as an engineer with a structured approach to learning and development.”
Adam’s achievement reflects the considerable work he invested throughout the programme. RI Training looks forward to seeing him continue to develop the training function in his role as Training Manager at Pitkin and Ruddock.
Congratulations, Adam, on a thoroughly deserved achievement.
